Ag Playbook
About the Ag Playbook
Innovation in agriculture is essential but evaluating that innovation (especially before it’s commercial) is hard without a shared baseline for how ag products are actually built, tested, and approved. The Ag Playbook was created to provide that common “language” and stage-based framework, helping startups, investors, and industry teams understand what meaningful progress looks like across the R&D pipeline, and how to plan for the real cost and effort required to reach launch.

Ag Playbook 2.0
The second edition of the Ag Playbook, launched in 2026, builds on the original Playbook launched in 2025 for understanding regulated AgTech product development while adding three new chapters:
“The Six ‘R’ Eras of AgTech” introduces a capital-markets perspective, linking today’s funding environment with the longer timelines of regulated innovation.
“The Critical Role of Regulatory Strategy” highlights how early regulatory planning, around freedom to operate, approvability, and market sequencing, can significantly de-risk development.
The main addition of Second Edition is the chapter “Crop Protection Biomolecules”. It expands the Playbook beyond small molecules to cover the discovery, development, and scale-up challenges of biomolecule-based crop protection.
